Volunteer FAQ's

What does a Global Village trip look like?

Trips vary based on the country and itinerary, but all of them include a mix of work, rest and free time/recreation. You will build safe, affordable houses in places where they are desperately needed, but will also have the opportunity to see another culture from a unique perspective.

Can anyone volunteer?

Absolutely!  Habitat welcomes everyone who wants to contribute to their work, no matter the age, background, religion or race. Because manual labor is a key part of the trip, all participants should be in good health.

What if I have no construction experience?

No problem!  All we ask for is flexibility -- and a desire to work hard.  You will be trained by local staff at the work site.

Can my teenage son/daughter (grandson/granddaughter) go on a Global Village trip?

Global Village trips are open to adults 18 and over, as well as young people, ages16-17, if they are accompanied by a parent. Global Village is a wonderful experience to share with young family members!

I haven’t traveled internationally before. How do I prepare?

The good news is that you don’t need to speak another language or have previous experience to join! You will likely need a passport, but requirements for passports, visas and vaccines vary by country. Kate can provide additional information.

What is included in the trip cost?

Costs vary by location, but fees include a donation to the host community’s Habitat program, in-country transportation, food, accommodations, select activities and travel medical insurance. Trip costs do not include airfare in and out of the country, activities beyond what is outlined in the trip details, visa and exit fees, any associated vaccines or trip cancellation insurance.

How do I bring my group on a trip?

Small groups of friends or family can generally be accommodated easily on a Global Village build. If your group is larger (8+ individuals), Habitat offers a'closed' team option. With roughly six months of lead time, Habitat can facilitate a trip for your troup. Please contact Kate for more info.

Is volunteering in another country safe?

Habitat has a long history of working in other countries, and volunteer health and safety is the top priority. HFH partners in these nations know and live in the area, and help ensure a safe and valuable experience for volunteers year after year. We also regularly follow international travel advisories closely. While we cannot guarantee personal safety, we do everything possible to keep volunteers out of harm’s way, both on and off the work site, and also include travel medical insurance in the trip cost.

Can I join a GV trip if I’m not from the U.S.?

Absolutely! Global Village is open to everyone. Past participants on my trips have been from all over the world -- Canada, England, Portugal, Germany, Singapore, United Arab Emirages and the US. Part of going on a Global Village trip is sharing your own culture.
